DETERMINATION OF ACRYLIC/COTTON BLEND

DETERMINATION OF ACRYLIC/COTTON BLEND:
PROCEDURES:
STEP 1: FROM THE TEST SAMPLE, DRAW A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE WEIGHING ABOUT
2GM. CUT THE TEST SPECIMEN INTO PIECES OF APPROXIMATELY 25MM IN LENGTH
STEP 2: DRY THE PIECES OF THE TEST SPECIMEN AT 105±3 DEG CENTRIGRADE FOR 3 HOURS. COOL IT AND DETERMINE THE OVEN-DRY WEIGHT OF THE TEST SPECIMEN
STEP 3: PUT ALL THE PIECES INTO A GLASS BEAKER AND ADD 40ML OF DIMETHYL FORMAMIDE TO IT.
STEP 4: HEAT THE BEAKER FOR ONE HOUR AT 90DEG CENTRIGRADE IN A WATER BATH WITH GENTLE SHAKING OF THE CONTENTS
STEP 5: FILTER THE CONTENTS THROUGH A NYLON FILTER CRUCIBLE. TRANSFER ANY RESIDUAL FIBRES FROM THE BEAKER WITH LITTLE HOT DIMETHYL FORMAMIDE SOLUTION
STEP 6: WASH THE RESIDUE SUCCESSIVELY WITH DISTILLED WATER AND DRY THE CRUCIBLE AT 105±3 DEG CENTRIGRADE FOR 3 HOURS. DETERMINE THE OVEN DRY WEIGHT OF THE RESIDUE

CALCULATIONS:
W= OVEN DRY WEIGHT OF THE TEST SPECIMEN
F = OVEN DRY WEIGHT OF THE RESIDUE
P = PERCENTAGE BY WEIGHT OF ACRYLIC FIBRES
   = (W- F) X100
            W
P’ = PERCENTAGE BY WEIGHT OF COTTON FIBRES
    = 100 – P
